What are IIC and FIIC?  Impact Insulation Class (IIC) rates a floor/ceiling assembly’s ability to reduce structure-borne and impact sound (footfalls, dropped items, moving furniture, etc.)  IIC is tested in a laboratory environment by using a standard tapping machine to measure the sound transmitted to the room directly below the floor assembly.  Field Impact Insulation Class (FIIC) is tested in the field.  IIC and FIIC are overall ratings of floor, ceiling and toppings.  A limitation of the IIC rating is that it is not possible to compare two toppings if they are tested on different base floors.

What is ∆ IIC?  ∆ IIC measures the “improvement” provided by a topping (sound product) on a 6” concrete slab.  The improvement rating (∆ IIC) can be used to compare floor covering products directly.  SonoGrip achieved a DIIC rating of 16.

How can IIC be improved?  A common technique is to cover the basic floor surface with a resilient layer (such as SonoGrip) covered by the hard walking surface.  The IIC obtained with the standard tapping machine depends on the combination of the toppings and basic floor and ceiling assembly.

What is the best way to compare the different sound products on the market?  Fortunately, the “improvement” (∆ IIC rating) provided by a topping on a concrete slab is largely independent of the slab thickness and its other properties.  So, the improvements can be compared and the toppings ranked.

Can SonoGrip protect the finished floors from cracking?  Yes.  SonoGrip™  will protect against cracks up to ¼” and achieved the highest possible rating of “High Performance” when tested by the Tile Council of North America (TCNA).

Does SonoGrip replace traditional mortar?  Yes.  SonoGrip™, when used “as adhesive”, replaces traditional mortar.

Can SonoGrip be used directly over Gypcrete?  Yes.  SonoGrip™ has a tenacious bond and can be installed directly to Gypcrete or any other gypsum based substrates.  In 1 step SonoGrip™ provides setting, crack isolation and sound attenuation.  Also, no overspray (primer) is needed.

Can SonoGrip be used to bond cement and other backer boards to substrate?  Yes.  SonoGrip™ can be used to provide a “fasten-less” system in this application.
